Диксиленд (dixieland) - the name of jazz ensembles New Orleans the style, consisting of white musicians. The name occurs from the designation of the South of the USA extended in the American folklore.

Exact sources of this word are not known till now. Most likely, a role the border name between free northern states and the slaveholding south - Mason Diksona's line (by name the senators who have offered such division of the country) here has played.

According to other version, word Д has become current in those days when the bank of New Orleans has let out banknotes advantage in 10 dollars with the right of circulation in the south of the USA on which the word «dix» has been distinctly printed.

In connection with a racial discrimination, which existed in a jazz to second half 30th (in occurrence of the mixed orchestras), white musicians did not want that their collectives carried names New Orleans, it would put them on one foot with the Negro executors, playing this style.

In the beginning white ensembles did not differ from Negro both on an execution manner, and on tool structure. Later, in Д is wider, than in Negro ensembles, began to use elements of the European composer technics. The manner звукоизвлечения has changed, the melodic line became smoother.

In 1915 there was an ensemble «Tom Brown's Dixieland Band», and in 1917 in cafe Rozenvebera in New York with the big success debuted «Original Dixieland Jazz Band». This collective posesses the big merit in jazz popularisation.

In February, 1917 its game has been written down by firm "Victor" on the first jazz phonograph records, and two years after ensemble has left on tour to London, having acquainted thus with a jazz of Europeans.

Further development Д has received in 20th in Chicago, however in due course has been betrayed to oblivion in connection with swing occurrence. In the late thirties revival Д is observed, and in post-war years it has received a wide circulation not only in the USA, but also in Europe, mainly in England, France, Holland, Czechoslovakia and the USSR.
